This is a step-by-step guide on how to create a new or edit an existing On-Site Engagement. The creation flow includes three steps: Content, Trigger events and Trigger settings.
Content
Content is the first tab when editing your On-Site Engagement and this is where you add or modify the On-Site Engagement content, including name, type, layout and text.
Basic information
In the field, fill in the name of your On-Site Engagement. This name is not visible to website visitors and will only show on your On-Site Engagement overview within the Editor.
Select an engagement type
Pick the desired On-Site Engagement type and how you want it to be displayed on your website. The display layout options are based on the engagement type you've selected - some engagement types have several layout options and others only have one. Get an overview of the different engagement types, layout options and specific input fields here.
Several languages
If your website is in several languages, your On-Site Engagements will need to have content in each of your languages. This ensures a consistent experience for your visitors as the language on the engagement automatically follows the language that the visitor is browsing the website in (e.g. the French language On-Site Engagement will be displayed when the visitor is browsing the French version of the website).
Trigger events
Trigger events is the second tab when creating or editing your On-Site Engagement and this is where you define the specific actions you want to trigger the appearance of your engagement. Your engagement will only be displayed on your website when all the trigger events selected here are fulfilled.
Trigger events summary
At the top of the page you can find a summary of the trigger events that are currently enabled for the specific On-Site Engagement.
Geographical location
The location trigger is related to the geographical location of the website visitor, based on their IP address. With this trigger enabled, the engagement will only appear to visitors who are in the location that you've specified. The preferences for this trigger include the target location, full address or latitude/longitude and the area type: country, region or city.
Use case: this trigger is relevant if you have an event taking place at a physical location and thereby only want to promote the event to visitors that are in the area.
Specific time range
With the specific time range trigger, the engagement will only appear during the period of time that you specify. Define a start time for the appearance of your engagement and the Editor will by default select an end time one month from your selected start time. You can manually change the end time if you want the appearance to be longer or shorter than a month.
If you don't have a specific time that the engagement must start or end, you have the option to choose All day. Finally, select whether the date and time should be based on the user's time zone (provided by their browser) or a specific time zone of your choice.
Use case: this trigger is relevant if you have an offer that is only valid for a specific period of time, for example a Black Friday sale.
Number of visits
The visits trigger allows you to define the number of times a website visitor must have visited your website before the On-Site Engagement appears. For example, if you set the visits trigger to 3, the engagement will only appear the third time a visitor is accessing your site.
Use case: this trigger is relevant if you want to promote something to visitors who have already indicated (through their browsing behavior) that they are interested in your website and products/services.
Number of page views
The page views trigger is based on how many pages a visitor must have visited before the engagement appears. The trigger doesn't consider which specific pages the visitor must have visited but only the amount of pages visited.
Use case: this trigger is relevant if you want to promote something to visitors who have already indicated (through their browsing behavior) that they are interested in your website and products/services.
Campaign link
The campaign link trigger allows you to define a specific URL string that will trigger the On-Site Engagement; this means that the On-Site Engagement will only be shown when the user visits after having clicked a specific campaign URL (for example from an email newsletter).
The preference for this trigger include the campaign URL parameters that will trigger the oOn-Site Engagement: the key - character before "=" - and the value - characters after "=".
Specific URL
The specific URL trigger is based on which URL the visitors are visiting the website from. With this trigger, your On-Site Engagement only appears for visitors who are landing on your website from the URL that you specify. For example. if you add www.google.com as the referral URL, your engagement will only appear to visitors who arrive at your website from a Google search.
Use case: this trigger is relevant if you want to engage specifically with visitors who have displayed a certain behavior prior to coming to your website.
Scrolling on page
With the scrolling on page trigger enabled, your engagement only appears once the visitor scrolls to the bottom of a page on your website.
Use case: this trigger is relevant if you want to promote something to visitors who have displayed an interest in your content.
Trigger settings
Trigger settings is the third tab when editing your On-Site Engagement and this is where you define appearance, animations and visibility of your engagement.
Appearance
Define the timing, transition type and persistance of your engagement's appearance.
- This engagement should appear after: select the preferred time (in seconds) - the count starts from when the trigger events are met.
- This engagement should disappear after: select the preferred time (in seconds) - the count starts from the time of appearance of the engagement.
- Show engagement on every visit: enable this option if you want your engagement to appear every time the trigger events are met. If this isn't enabled, every website visitor will only see this engagement once.
- Transition: select the animated entrance of your engagement. Find a full overview of all transition types here.
Sticky On-Site Engagements
Please note that if you have selected a sticky On-Site Engagement type, the above settings cannot be defined as this particular engagement type is static on the page.
Visibility
- Customize visibility: untoggle this setting if you want your engagement to be hidden. When activating this setting, your engagement will automatically be visible from the time you activate it. If you want to schedule your engagement to become active at a future date, select the desired date and time from the calendar.
- Show only on these pages: the engagement is by default active on all pages. If you only want your engagement visible on certain pages, select the specific pages from the dropdown. You can select as many pages as you wish.
- Show on desktop, tablet or mobile: select what devices you want the engagement to show on.
